What Our Clients Say
Lovely food. Best fish and chips I've had in the USA. All the food was wonderful.
On a recent visit to Lopez Island, we visited the Blue Heron Bistro. Lovely, little restaurant. One of us had the halibut and chips, fabulous! Another had the the dungeness mac and cheese. This was the most amazing sauce and totally decadent!!! Our third person ordered the garden salad with chicken. This was a total disappointment. It was relaid that with the chicken it was substantial for lunch. When it arrived, barely enough lettuce or chicken. Very, very small salad. She had to come home for a sandwich as she was still hungry! This choice needs work!!!! Otherwise, it was lovely!
Blue Heron catered my daughter's wedding in the San Juan Islands- and they were AMAZING! The food was extraordinary- absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. All of the guests raved about the food- it was truly spectacular. They did impressive appetizers with grilled oysters, three main courses, fabulous cakes and blackberry galette- I cannot recommend Blue Heron more highly, I need more stars than 5!
Ordered the bacon jam burger that was so juicy, and the chicken marsala pasta, everything was so delicious and the service/server was amazing and friendly☺️
Superb food and great service! One of our new favorite spots on the island.
We read through many of the reviews and I am surprised that a few guests gave Blue Heron Bistro anything other than five stars. Not only was our meal incredible, the staff continued to check-in, gave great local recommendations, the atmosphere was laid back and peaceful. All around five stars! We are visiting from Walla Walla, WA, and we work hard as a small town to cater to the stream of visitors to make them feel welcome and cared for, and that is how we felt as guests at Blue Heron. Keep up the good work folks!
My wife and I celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary at The Blue Heron Bistro on Lopez Island yesterday, and it was an absolutely unforgettable evening. From the moment we walked in, the warm and attentive service made us feel like honored guests—our server was friendly, and went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect without being intrusive. We started by sharing the creamy clam chowder, which was rich and flavorful with fresh ingredients, and the crab cakes, perfectly crispy on the outside with tender, sweet crab inside. For mains, my wife opted for the chicken Marsala, which she raved about for its tender chicken and deeply savory mushroom sauce, while I indulged in the special of the day: fresh halibut with a delightful curry sauce that balanced subtle spices with the fish's natural freshness—it was out-of-this-world delicious! The entire experience was so enjoyable and memorable, turning our special milestone into something truly magical. Thank you to the team at The Blue Heron Bistro for making our anniversary dinner one we'll cherish forever. We can't wait to return and highly recommend this gem to anyone visiting Lopez!
My family ate here twice on our visit to Lopez Island and it was *wonderful* both times. The staff are incredibly friendly and the food is so delicious. My favorite things I ordered were the Local Berry Chevre Salad and the Key Lime Pie, they were both absolutely decadent. The only note that I have is that, on the regular menu, a Shirley Temple is 6 dollars, and on the drinks menu it's 8, if I recall correctly.
This restaurant should have a five-star rating. We started with the beet salad with fresh local greens, chevre, and hazelnuts. We then moved to a creamy, delicately spiced Dungeness crab sandwich that was complimented by Granny Smith apple slices served on a tender focaccia bread. We had gin and tonic with Aloo Gin, A delicate, juniper forward spirit which I cannot recommend enough. We are very picky eaters, and I cannot stress enough how delicate and complex the flavors were with this food! We finished with a carrot cake with a half inch thick cream cheese frosting, with fresh carrot slices in the cake (likely locally sourced). If you find yourself on Lopez Island, in the heart of the San Juans, do yourself a favor and have a meal at the Blue Heron Bistro. You won't regret it.

With over four decades of culinary mastery spanning from the rustic kitchens of France to the vibrant dining scenes of the Florida Keys and the Pacific Northwest, Chef Christian brings an authentic, world-class soul to our kitchen.
The Journey from France to Florida
Chef’s journey began at the age of 16 in France, where he underwent a rigorous apprenticeship, honing the foundational techniques of classical French cuisine. After graduating as a Comis de Cuisine, he brought his talents across the Atlantic to Key West, Florida. There, he served as the Sous Chef at the renowned Café des Artistes and led the kitchen at Croissant de France.
His pursuit of excellence later took him to Boca Raton, where he contributed to the prestigious 5-star kitchen of La Vieille Maison and the exclusive Boca Rio Country Club. He eventually returned to the Keys to take on the role of Executive Sous Chef for two of the island’s most iconic properties: The Reach Resort and Casa Marina.
A Seattle Culinary Icon
In 2000, Chef Christian made the move to Seattle, quickly becoming a staple of the city’s French culinary community. After influential tenures at beloved spots like Figaro Bistro, La Bodega, Purple Café, and Au Bouchon, he stepped into the role of Executive Chef at the legendary Maximillien.
Over the past 19 years at the helm of Maximillien, Chef has become synonymous with consistency, elegance, and the art of the French bistro. Today, he brings that same passion for heritage, technique, and seasonal storytelling to our bistro, ensuring every plate is a celebration of a life lived through food.
Sous Chef & Catering Chef
Chef James Barber joins our bistro with a prestigious pedigree, recently honored as the 2026 Chef of the Year by Restaurant Guide International. Originally from South Carolina, James’s culinary journey began in his mother’s kitchen, where he developed a foundational love for both classical cooking and the intricate art of catering.
A Legacy of Leadership
In 2011, James founded Army of Chefs, a premier catering organization that evolved into a powerhouse brand overseeing seven distinct companies. His expertise in large-scale coordination—from community events and private chef services to test kitchens—earned his organization recognition from the American Culinary Federation (ACF) and the World Chefs Organization. Since 2022, James has held the rare distinction of being a member of the American Master Chefs’ Order (AMCO), entering as the youngest in his class by a 14-year margin.
From the Casino to the Islands
James’s career brought him out west during the pandemic, where he served as the Executive Chef and Food & Beverage Director for Coyote Valley Casino in California. Seeking the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, he moved to the San Juan Islands in 2023, serving as the Executive Chef for Camp Nor’wester before joining the Lopez School District for the 2024–2026 term.
