What Our Clients Say
Lovely food. Best fish and chips I've had in the USA. All the food was wonderful.
On a recent visit to Lopez Island, we visited the Blue Heron Bistro. Lovely, little restaurant. One of us had the halibut and chips, fabulous! Another had the the dungeness mac and cheese. This was the most amazing sauce and totally decadent!!! Our third person ordered the garden salad with chicken. This was a total disappointment. It was relaid that with the chicken it was substantial for lunch. When it arrived, barely enough lettuce or chicken. Very, very small salad. She had to come home for a sandwich as she was still hungry! This choice needs work!!!! Otherwise, it was lovely!
Blue Heron catered my daughter's wedding in the San Juan Islands- and they were AMAZING! The food was extraordinary- absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. All of the guests raved about the food- it was truly spectacular. They did impressive appetizers with grilled oysters, three main courses, fabulous cakes and blackberry galette- I cannot recommend Blue Heron more highly, I need more stars than 5!
Ordered the bacon jam burger that was so juicy, and the chicken marsala pasta, everything was so delicious and the service/server was amazing and friendly☺️
Superb food and great service! One of our new favorite spots on the island.
We read through many of the reviews and I am surprised that a few guests gave Blue Heron Bistro anything other than five stars. Not only was our meal incredible, the staff continued to check-in, gave great local recommendations, the atmosphere was laid back and peaceful. All around five stars! We are visiting from Walla Walla, WA, and we work hard as a small town to cater to the stream of visitors to make them feel welcome and cared for, and that is how we felt as guests at Blue Heron. Keep up the good work folks!
My wife and I celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary at The Blue Heron Bistro on Lopez Island yesterday, and it was an absolutely unforgettable evening. From the moment we walked in, the warm and attentive service made us feel like honored guests—our server was friendly, and went above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect without being intrusive. We started by sharing the creamy clam chowder, which was rich and flavorful with fresh ingredients, and the crab cakes, perfectly crispy on the outside with tender, sweet crab inside. For mains, my wife opted for the chicken Marsala, which she raved about for its tender chicken and deeply savory mushroom sauce, while I indulged in the special of the day: fresh halibut with a delightful curry sauce that balanced subtle spices with the fish's natural freshness—it was out-of-this-world delicious! The entire experience was so enjoyable and memorable, turning our special milestone into something truly magical. Thank you to the team at The Blue Heron Bistro for making our anniversary dinner one we'll cherish forever. We can't wait to return and highly recommend this gem to anyone visiting Lopez!
My family ate here twice on our visit to Lopez Island and it was *wonderful* both times. The staff are incredibly friendly and the food is so delicious. My favorite things I ordered were the Local Berry Chevre Salad and the Key Lime Pie, they were both absolutely decadent. The only note that I have is that, on the regular menu, a Shirley Temple is 6 dollars, and on the drinks menu it's 8, if I recall correctly.
This restaurant should have a five-star rating. We started with the beet salad with fresh local greens, chevre, and hazelnuts. We then moved to a creamy, delicately spiced Dungeness crab sandwich that was complimented by Granny Smith apple slices served on a tender focaccia bread. We had gin and tonic with Aloo Gin, A delicate, juniper forward spirit which I cannot recommend enough. We are very picky eaters, and I cannot stress enough how delicate and complex the flavors were with this food! We finished with a carrot cake with a half inch thick cream cheese frosting, with fresh carrot slices in the cake (likely locally sourced). If you find yourself on Lopez Island, in the heart of the San Juans, do yourself a favor and have a meal at the Blue Heron Bistro. You won't regret it.
I ordered the halibut fish and chips. It was absolutely the best i have ever eaten. The strawberry rhubard pie was amazing. Our server, Sara. Was adorable and so efficient. What a cute personality.
Our waitress was extremely attentive and personable. Our drinks were fantastic and the Bacon Jam Mac n Cheese was to die for! This is now a mandatory stop whenever we visit Lopez Island from here on out!!
My fiancé and I have been road tripping all over Washington and this is hands down the best food of the entire trip!! Fantastic food and great people, we came back 2 nights in a row
Tough to leave a review for this experience. It was a few days after the 4th and clearly the staff was exhausted and I believe this is the only legit restaurant open on Tuesday. Did we have to wait for just about everything, yes. Was it worth it, overall I’d say yes. The food we ordered was very good. All the food we saw being cooked and go out looked fantastic. Is it pricey, yes. Is it worth it, again probably yes. I’d love to go back when they are fully staffed. I’d try everything on this menu. Edit: Owner makes a fair point, it even says on the menu be ready to wait! Props to the staff here, tough job!
I’m surprised the ratings are not higher for this restaurant. We really enjoyed everything we ate. Quality ingredients and delicious salad especially- local goat cheese, blueberries, tender flavorful chicken, balsamic glaze… yum! Yeah, it’s a bit expensive but it’s great to have a quality restaurant open weekdays on Slow- pez! It’s also possible to dine with well behaved dog on the deck- can’t beat that!
Our first stop on Lopez Island didn't disappoint. The servers were friendly & efficient. The food was outstanding! So fresh - it's apparent that they use local ingredients. Hubby had a bistro burger with fries & I had a salmon burger with salad. The house salad dressing is one of the best dressings I've ever eaten. Of course we had dessert - brownie a la mode for him & mixed berry pie for me. So, so good! Highly recommend.
Such delicious food and fantastic service!!! Highly recommend the crab artichoke dip as well as the pasta. If you are visiting Lopez this is a can’t miss meal!
I enjoyed Blue Heron Bistro so much that I went back for a second time during my small vacation. Everyone was warm and inviting, and the food was absolutely delicious. You really can't go wrong when you go there.
Clam chowder not good. Burger was plain. But chicken sandwich was great. Service seemed confused. They seemed to not know if they should charge for ice tea refills.
Absolutely exceeds my expectations every time. Quality, local ingredients that you can taste the difference. Ambience is warm and comfortable. Worth the trip for sure. A must do for any Lopez visit.
If you're looking for a cozy family owned bistro in a beautiful setting that serves great food and values their patrons, then this is your spot. Located in Lopez Village, Blue Heron does an all around amazing job. My friend and I who work in the San Juan Islands met up here for a drink and to grab lunch on our way to the ferry. We were extremely happy with our visit. Service was extremely quick, the beer was fantastic and the food was outstanding. We got to chat with the chef, who was an extremely nice guy and the owner Jennifer. You can tell that they truly care about the business and everyone that comes to support them. This is the place to come eat when visiting Lopez Island. Absolutely phenomenal little bistro in the amazing San Juan Islands.
We are sure to eat here every time we visit Lopez Island. The food is great and so are the staff. You can’t go wrong no matter what you get to eat.
The Chicken Parmesan sandwich is ridiculously good! 10/10 would go back for just that.
Jen and her crew provided a fantastic catering and bar service for our wedding. There were multiple things that made our wedding dinner stand out. The food was flavorful and visually spectacular, Blue Heron staff were energetic, helpful and kind, and the bar service was outstanding. Blue Heron Catering made both a seafood and mixed meat paella. Both of which were extraordinary. The flavor was amazing and all the ingredients were fresh and selected the week of the wedding. The paella had the perfect balance of Spanish flavors and zest. The seafood and meat was plentiful. Additionally, they had really delicious appetizers, including croquettes, which were handmade. Multiple guests complimented the apps and the meal. For salads we enjoyed heirloom tomatoes from a local farm with burrata. The crew was also able to put together snacks for kids that were served during the cocktail hour. The paella was cooked on site and was a feast for the eyes. From preparing the rice and spices to incorporating the fish and meats, we got to witness and smell it all. With a lot of foodie friends, we got lots of compliments. They were able to set everything up on site on the day of the wedding. And they were very accommodating to the private property we hosted our event at, which had several logistical obstacles. We learned later that due to some ferry cancellations they actually chartered a boat for their team to Orcas Island to make sure everything went exactly on time. The bar service was A+++ and each drink was handmade to order. We enjoyed palmos, old fashions, sangria and plenty of wine and beers. On the morning of the wedding, Jen asked if we needed anything last minute and she was able to kindly pick up some cold brew coffees, and creamers to go along with our wedding cake. They were very professional. Their food was delicious and their entire team was very kind and had a great attitude. We cannot recommend them enough.
The menu is interesting, but most of our food was bland. The crab cakes were very good, but the appetizers lacked any spice, including salt. We did eat outside, which was nice.
A lil expensive, however, the server (don't know his name, the guy with the beard and tall) was veeeery professional, polite, and provided an outstanding customer service! All he did was like the servers should do, so, 13/10 stars to him!!!
This place was good! Our server was nice, and we brought our dog to sit on the deck. There was an eclectic mix of people there, a group of weirdly snobby people drinking wine and laughing haughtily in what looked like clothing you would wear to a country club, a laid back couple who had been biking, some locals eating out, a guy on a laptop, etc. The food was really good.
Great drinks, entre and service. No hovering but attentive care. Love this place!
We had a great birthday dinner for our 19 year old at The Blue Heron Bistro. The food was great, awesome vegetarian ravioli for my husband. The crab was fresh and delicious on my crab ceaser. They had a fun selection of non alcohol drink options to celebrate! Service was great and it was fun to have a “fancy” but super low key comfortable dinner out. They also have a great affordable kids menu for the little ones.
We arrived at 4:30 to a near empty and unbusy restaurant and started by finding that some of their pricey specialty cocktails are canned. Ordered the fried artichoke appetizer. It was served without side plates and then the server disappeared. The breaded little nuggets looked factory made then frozen. The chicken marsala main dish looked nice with sliced zucchini, a wild rice blend, and the chicken with mushrooms. Unfortunately, the chicken was overcooked and the butter-based sauce had been served broken and was oily. The zucchini, though fresh, appeared to be steamed as in a microwave and was unseasoned and bland. Throughout the meal, empty service remained uncleared. The overall service was poor.
We had a wonderful lunch here. Everything was on point. Nice cocktails. The Umami Chicken Sandwich was spectacular. Really good oyster Po Boy. Thanks Blue Heron crew!
Clean spot. Cashiers are friendly. My only complaint is that it didnt say the cocktails were not handmade on the menu. Probably wouldn’t have ordered drinks if i knew they were canned cocktails.
Great restaurant and family atmosphere! I recommend asking for the special of the day! 😋
